About Sandbanks

Sandbanks Coffee Cottage

Sand Banks established in 2000 is one of the first homestays in Coorg. Sand Banks was started more as a passion, with the intention of meeting different people from varied backgrounds. Hospitality has always been in our blood, and my grandparents and parents, played host to many guests, both from India & abroad, though not commercially. Polaycad estate of which Sand banks is a part,is an over 100 year old family property.’Polay’ meaning river and ‘cad’ meaning jungle, both of which form a major part of Polaycad estate. Being a joint family those days, my father who was the eldest son assisted his parents in planting and managing the estate . My father who was also employed, returned to the estate in the 1950s .In 1978 after my grandfathers’s demise the property ,was shared & so we moved house, to where we reside at present. Having done my schooling at Clarence High school and bachelor of commerce at St Josephs College of Commerce in Bangalore, I worked for four years with Harrisons Malayams, a plantation company in Kerala after which, I joined Hindustan Motors at their manufacturing plant in Hosur. The call of home being very strong, I returned in 1989 and managing the family coffee plantation since then was my main priority. Hailing from a family of sports persons, I represented Bangalore University in hockey. My wife Sapna who mostly runs Sand Banks did her schooling in St Lourdes Convent, after which she completed her Homescience at the popular Vimlayam college in Cochin. In 2006 due to the pressures and problems faced by the homestay owners, a group of us started the Coorg Homestay Association. I was nominated as the founder President of the Association. I was also a past president of the Rotary club of Virajpet and chairman of the Rotary school.
